Nice to Meet You!
I am Reverend Alexis Carter Thomas
I am a minister, writer, and consultant. I have been nurtured by my maternal and paternal grandparents, my parents, aunties, uncles, church mothers, deacons and mentors. I fell in love with Jesus and the possibilities of the kingdom of God at a Baptist church with red-cushioned pews, stained glass windows, and where soulful organ music filled the sanctuary on Sunday mornings.
I travel and dine with dreamers, social activists and passionate folks. I am nourished by savory meals with good souls. I relish sunny days, hopeful happenings, and work that repairs the world. I gain inspiration from road trips, soul-stirring stories, and talks with John. I relish road trips--they mean forward movement and invite inner stillness and contemplation. I like the way the ocean tide pulls me to dream, pray and wonder.
In 2019, I became the recipient of a Reflective Leadership grant from Leadership Education at Duke Divinity. This afforded me the opportunity to conduct research on the flourishing of Black clergywomen throughout the United States. This exploration and research led me through a passageway from which I emerged with insights and a deep sense of calling to do work that prioritizes the care and liberation of Black women. The voices and writings of womanist theologians have been balm and force for the ways that I lead.
My work invites others to engage with the disturbing and difficult aspects of faith and society through prayer, reading, reflection and acts of service.
My colleagues describe me as an activator, connector, and archivist of stories.
I earned a Master of Divinity from the Divinity School at Duke University; and a Doctor of Ministry with a concentration in Women’s Religious Leadership at Drew Theological School in May 2023. I have certificates in courses that have equipped and sharpened skills around public narrative and coaching.
I am married to John who is her partner in life and love. I desire for my presence and work to bear witness to the goodness of this life and the glory of God.
